Our story

Soup in a pot is a must

There is a hippopotamus in a chef's hat on the front of every bag, and that tells you most of what you need to know about Susan Efthimou. She started Soupapotamus in Painted Post, New York, selling soup at farmers markets around Corning, working with the small farms right there for the vegetables, the herbs and even the maple sugar. The soups are dried, which sounds unromantic until you work out what it buys you: a real bowl of soup that waits in your cupboard until the night you need it. Add water. Heat it. Twenty minutes later there is dinner on the table, made from vegetables that grew about an hour away, and you did almost nothing. Soup in a pot is a must, it says on the bag, and she means it.

Our take
“We love having one of these in the cupboard for the nights when cooking is just not happening. You add water, you walk away, and twenty minutes later it tastes like somebody actually made soup, which is not something we get to say about most shelf-stable dinners. Creamy Potatomus is where we'd start, and honestly, the hippo in the chef's hat is the kind of detail that tells you a real person is behind this one.”

Soupapotamus FAQ

Straight answers to what our community asks most.

How do you make Soupapotamus soup?

Add water and heat it. That is genuinely the whole method. Each bag is a dried soup that rehydrates in the pot in about twenty minutes, and the bag tells you how much water and how long. No stock to make, no chopping, nothing to thaw.

Which Soupapotamus soups are gluten free?

Some of them, and not all of them. Soups like Creamy Potatomus, Creamy Broccoli Cheddar, Creamy Wild Rice and Fiesta Enchilada are labeled gluten free. Others are not: their Pasta Fagioli is made with Italian wheat pasta and their Fireside Barley is made with pearl barley, and both are labeled accordingly. Always check the bag, and if you have celiac disease, contact them about how the gluten-free soups are produced.

Are the soups vegetarian or dairy free?

It depends entirely on the soup. Their Taco Truck is vegan. Several of the bean soups are dairy free. But the creamy soups contain dairy, and Creamy Potatomus is made with chicken broth, so it is not vegetarian despite how it looks. This is a range where the bag matters more than the brand.

Where are the ingredients from?

Upstate New York, mostly. Soupapotamus works with small farms near where the soups are made in Painted Post, and the vegetables, herbs and even the maple sugar in some recipes are sourced locally. The company describes everything as locally and ethically sourced.

How long do they keep?

They are shelf stable, so they live in the cupboard rather than the fridge or the freezer. No refrigeration needed until you have made the soup. Check the bag for the best by date.
