Our story

It started as a gift for the neighbors

Good Friend started in 2020 as a gift. Marie Sonalet grew up in France around corner bakeries, and she began baking dense, seedy loaves for her neighbors in Oregon. What she called Ogia turned into a small bakery shipping bread across the country. When she moved back to Europe in 2025 she did the thing you hope happens to a business somebody built by hand: she gave it to friends. Beth and Jerek Lovey took it on, renamed it Good Friend in 2026, which is what bon ami means, and kept baking in Redmond. The bread is built on seeds rather than starch. Oats, sunflower, flax, pumpkin, chia and psyllium instead of the gums and fillers most gluten-free bread leans on, which is why a slice holds together and why one actually fills you up.

Our take
“We love that this is seed bread rather than starch bread, and the difference shows up the moment you pick up a slice. Four mixes, one bowl, and an ingredient list short enough to read out loud: oats, sunflower, flax, chia, psyllium and whatever makes that one its own. If you had given up on gluten-free bread being worth the effort of making yourself, this is the one we would have you try first.”

Good Friend FAQ

Straight answers to what our community asks most.

What is actually in your bread mixes?

Seeds, mostly. Every mix starts with organic rolled oats, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, psyllium husk and chia seeds, then adds whatever makes that flavor its own: almonds and dried apricots, cranberries and walnuts, dark chocolate, or pumpkin seeds. That is the whole list. No gums, no fillers, no eggs, no preservatives and nothing labeled natural flavors. The psyllium husk does the binding that gums usually do.

Are your mixes gluten free?

Yes, our mixes are gluten free and dairy free. Our base ingredient is organic rolled oats. Oats are naturally gluten free but can pick up gluten in the field and in handling, so if you have celiac disease please reach out to us before ordering and we will tell you exactly how ours are sourced and handled.

What allergens are in the mixes?

It depends which one. Our Apricot Almond mix contains almonds and our Cranberry Walnut mix contains walnuts, so both carry a tree nut warning. Our Dark Chocolate and Pumpkin Seed mixes do not contain tree nuts. None of our mixes contain dairy, eggs or soy. The variety pack contains all four, so treat the box as containing tree nuts.

How hard is it to actually make?

Not hard, which is the point. Add water, stir it in one bowl, let it sit, bake. There is no proofing schedule, no yeast to coax along and no special pan. Each 10 oz bag makes one loaf, and the method fits on the back of the bag.

Where is Good Friend made?

Everything is made by hand in Redmond, in Central Oregon. The bakery was started in 2020 by Marie Sonalet and is now run by Beth and Jerek Lovey, who took it over from her in 2025 and renamed it Good Friend in 2026. Bon ami is French for good friend, which is where the name comes from.
